Service: Eterna calibre 703R (Valjoux22)

Eterna chrongraphA client has sent in his Eterna chronograph for a service as it has an unknown service history and is not running very well. Eterna do not have in-house chronograph movements, but did have some very cool designs and good quality cases.

All the levers have a rough finish which makes me think this watch has had rust damage removed at one point.

P1070533

The backside of the dial is floating in oil, lucky it has not run out to the face side!

P1070534

I remove the oil from the dial straight away.

P1070535

I start taking the setting/winding mechanism apart.

P1070539

The dial side of the base plate is swimming in oil…

P1070544

I now start taking apart the chronograph layer.

P1070549

That spring is not correct!

P1070552

Chronograph layer almost taken apart.

P1070554

I’m now down to the base movement.

P1070555

Just the setting lever screw left.

P1070568

I have polished the levers and screw heads and here are the parts after cleaning

P1070569

I see that the balance moves freely.

P1070571

I fit the winding/setting mechanism.

P1070573

Here you can see I have fitted the gear train.

P1070614

Oops! I broke the pallet fork pivot.. I decide to make a new one.

P1070615

Third time lucky

P1070616

I press fit the new axel into the pallet fork.

P1070574

Movement is running!

P1070617

And preforming:)

P1070618

I start putting the chronograph back together.

P1070620

Movement looks much nicer after being cleaned up!

P1070872

I find and replace the column wheel spring.

P1070536

Old pushers are in a bit of a state and not matching so I replace them.

P1070611

Thats a lot better!

Eterna calibre 703R

Movement goes back into the case looking very nice!

P1070874

The hands get “new” luminous compound to match the dial.

Eterna 703R

Perfect amount of patina on a great looking watch!

Excellent – the case and dial are in unusually good condition too, great find!
Did you have to shorten the pusher shafts when you fitted the new ones, M?

Great work as always! Mitka, do you have a special tool to remove those jewel caps?
