Service: Junghans Max Bill Calibre 83

IMG_2505

A client sent in his lovely Junghans Automatic with a dial designed by legendary Bauhaus designer Max Bill. It’s preforming a little erratically and could benefit from a service.

Movement is Junghans all in-house calibre 83.

IMG_2551

I start by removing some of the winding mechanism while the movement is still in the case.

IMG_2555

Here you can see the hands and dial removed.

IMG_2557

A very nice detail is the jewel barrel bridge.

IMG_2560

Here you can see the gear train layout.

IMG_2564

Old mainspring.

IMG_2584

Here the movement has been cleaned and ready to go back together.

IMG_2585

I have cleaned and oiled the old mainspring as I could not find a new one.

IMG_2586

I see that the balance swings freely after oiling. Note the special shock protection system used by Junghans.

IMG_2587

I start putting the gear train back in place.

IMG_2588

It’s a little tricky to fit the train bridge in place as the third wheel has to fit inside a slot between the centre wheel bush and where you place the central seconds pinion.

IMG_2589

This movement is in pristine condition.

IMG_2591

Winding/setting mechanism back in place.

IMG_2594

We now have a running watch. I have also fitted the winding mechanism. This movement is fully jewelled and top quality all over.

IMG_2593

Watch is preforming very well.

IMG_2595

I’m now ready for the dial and hands.

IMG_2596

Movement goes into the case looking great.

IMG_2605

I finish by fitting the oscillating weight

IMG_2606

Very nice watch with an unusual and funky movement.
